Description

This is the last part of the Beaduheard story, the first part you'll find here: I Beaduheard, come in the name of the king

When Beaduheard and his men reached the shore of Portland, a group of men have already gathered on the shore to receive them.
Beaduheard noticed that a few of the man looked rather ruffled, as if they've been up drinking all night, whilst others were well dressed and looked more healthy.
Some were tattooed on both arms and chest with strange symbols and patterns, still others had well groomed hair and beard. They were all weathered in their faces from their lives on the sea, but reddish on their torsos as if they've been in the glowing sun for to long.

Several of the men that gathered around the reeve were armed, carrying spear and axes, and soon they all started to talk over the top of each other.
Beaduheard could understand a few words here and there and soon figured out from their language that they were of the people they themselves referred to as Danes.

But then the men pulled back and one of them walked forth, he was taller than the others and he had a well groomed beard and his hair he wore cropped in the back and his bangs were long. He pulled back his mantle and exposed his silver adorned hilt.
He then proceeded stating his name and the name of his father, and then presented himself as the spokesman for the group. And then urged the reeve and his men to hand over their weapons.

As a reeve Beaduheard was responsible to uphold the law in his king's land and had the absolute right to practice what force he thought necessary.
Now we can obviously imagine that Beaduheard refused and might even have drew his own sword. But before an alien force that did not acknowledge his authority this was a pointless move, and Beaduheard and his men were ruthlessly cut down on the shore of Portland.
This event has been written down in the Anglo-saxon chronicles together with the assault on Lindisfarne 793, as the end of the long peace in northern europe and soon no one would be safe from the Vikings.

------

Now however some say this might have been added later in the history books to make Wessex the first in contacting the Norsemen, personally i don't really see why some one would want to be the first to have been assaulted... Anyhow this took place in 789 which would make it 4 years earlier to Lindisfarne.

There also is quite a fun thing here i'd like to add, and that is the haircut noted by Beadueard. It would later on in the 10th-11th century England stir up quite the commotion when Anglo-Saxons started copy the pagan fashion or "Danish fashion" as it is referred to in Ælfric, letter to brother Edward, in that text it is described as "bared necks and blinded eyes". And speaking of hairstyles the Anglo-Saxons should probably be clean shaven and short hair or at least that was the fashion of the 11th century. But i gave them half long hair and groomed beards, perhaps that was illogical but fuck it ^^

Also it should be noted that the Vikings Beaduheard meet were from Hordaland which lies in Norway and if i'm not mistaken this would have made them Hǫrðar or Charudes as they are also known. The Anglo-Saxons however called all Scandinavians Danes, so you should not be led to believe they were Danish.

P.S. I know the clouds are mongoloid so you don't have to point it out.
